What is SAP S/4HANA Private Cloud?

SAP S/4HANA Private Cloud is a dedicated S/4HANA platform hosted by a hyperscaler of your choice (AWS, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud). Unlike Public Cloud, your company retains full access to the backend and ABAP code.
Private Cloud is available through two different programs:
  • SAP GROW, which is mainly associated with Public Cloud, although it also provides access to the Private Cloud variant, as an option for new SAP customers who immediately need more control than the standard offers.
  • RISE with SAP is the standard path for companies that already use SAP (usually ECC) and migrate their existing environment to Private Cloud.

What does SAP S/4HANA Private Cloud include?

Private Cloud offers the same functional scope as other S/4HANA variants—finance, purchasing, sales, supply chain, manufacturing, and quality management—but without the limitations typical of the SaaS model. Key elements of this variant include:

Dedicated server for your system

The infrastructure is not shared with other SAP customers

Brownfield Migration

Conversion of an existing ECC system is performed while preserving historical data and configuration

Controlled update schedule

Mainstream upgrade is performed once every 7 years or optionally more frequently upon customer request

Important: In addition to Private Cloud, RISE with SAP also offers an on-premises option, meaning the system is installed on your company’s infrastructure. The latest version, S/4HANA 2025, will be supported until 2030, and SAP has committed to releasing at least one update for the platform by 2040.

Who is SAP S/4HANA Private Cloud for?

Private Cloud is a natural choice where Public Cloud seems insufficient and the full independence guaranteed by on-premise is not necessarily needed:

Companies with extensive, custom solutions developed over many years (Z* programs, unique interfaces), whose reconstruction for SaaS would be unprofitable or too risky.

Such as: pharmaceutical (GMP), automotive, chemical, defense, where every system change requires formal validation, which is incompatible with forced quarterly Public Cloud updates.

SAP S/4HANA Private Cloud – FAQ

It is a dedicated, non-shared S/4HANA system platform, hosted by a hyperscaler, with full access to the code and the possibility of customization.

Private Cloud provides full access to the code and its own update schedule, at the cost of a longer implementation time. Public Cloud is faster and cheaper to start with, but lacks the ability for deep customization.

Private Cloud is hosted by a hyperscaler. On-premises is a system on your infrastructure, with complete independence but also full responsibility for maintenance.

The Brownfield method typically takes several to a dozen months, depending on the scale of customization and regulatory requirements. This is longer than in the Public Cloud, but you retain a complete data history.
